Bright science that benefits society is all about understanding and solving what we don’t yet know. But one thing we do know is that the more we collaborate and connect with the bright science both inside and outside of DSM…the more successful we will be.
Collaborating and connecting with bright science inside and outside of DSM

北京快3线路 Within DSM we increasingly use competences from one branch of science to help create innovations in another – for example, using expertise developed in food enzymes to create biofuels from corn crop residue.

Outside of DSM, we spread our net increasingly wide to capture the very best of what science has to offer. How wide? Today we’re taking part in more than 50 Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) programs enabling us to plug into some 40-plus academic groups; furthermore we work hand-in-hand with more than 80 industry parties via these partnerships.

BE-Basic Foundation

Public Private Partnerships

Our involvement in PPPs around the globe covers nutrition, health, and materials – providing invaluable access to new people and resources.

For example, through our PPP with the BE-Basic Foundation (Biotechnology based Ecologically Balanced Sustainable Industrial Consortium) we are working on biobased science that is not only effective but sustainable – and we’re doing so alongside various other industry partners (and even competitors).

Meanwhile our involvement in the InSciTe project is giving our scientists valuable access to a biomedical materials lab and bio-based pilot plant - as well as fellow scientists of course. The aim: To develop solutions for the ongoing health of an ageing population and for the sustainable production of chemicals and materials.

Plugging into academia

Ultimately, science is an academic discipline. And whilst today we have around 2,200 scientific experts and counting within DSM…we also recognize this is just a fraction of the knowledge and insight available. That is why our science community cooperates globally with over 100 universities and R&D institutions.

An example is our collaboration with pre-eminent organizations like the East China University of Science & Technology (ECUST). In particular, ECUST is helping us develop fermentation processes that will enable the more efficient production of everything from food and fuel to penicillin. What’s more it’s a partnership that continues putting down new roots by involving new industry and academic players across continents.

Creating shared value

The way we collaborate with customers is also changing; based more on creating shared value together rather than a traditional, transactional approach.

It’s why, for example, Mercedes-Benz has been able to achieve a 26% fuel consumption improvement for its new A-class model. We worked closely with the automotive giant to design an engine cover based on our EcoPaXX? bio-based polyamide that can resist extreme engine vibrations and temperatures of up to 200°C – all while retaining its classy look and feel. Good for people and planet.

Three different types of collaboration, but with one common result: Using science to solve societal problems.
